The Glorious Lilies: a family devotional

Devotional#12: 14 March 2017
"Planning Family Devotionals."

The Bible tells parents to raise their children in the "instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4 ESV

Most Christian parents recognize the Wisdom of this requirement, and desire to live it out in their own families, but many of us aren't sure how to come up with valuable lessons to share.

One of our aims here at The Humble Ant is to develop and share family-friendly Biblical devotional content that helps families to invigorate their own habit of regular worship together. We are also interested in helping to encourage parents as they attempt to develop their own word picture ideas.

Good news for parents!

God commissioned his own Son to come down here and show us how to do things ( Psalm 2 , Hebrews 13 ). Among other things ( John 21:25 ), Jesus demonstrated some exceptional story-telling and word picture selection. He knew how to keep crowds interested - even children enjoyed his material! ( Matthew 19 ).

One of our favorite of Christ's word-pictures is that of the Lily:

“Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.” Luke 12:27-31

Imagine Jesus speaking to a crowd full of His disciples in a grassy field highlighted by the beautiful Lilies that He is describing.

This picture, painted by Rose (age 6), helps me to imagine the Lilies in Christ's example as they "clothe the grass." He selected something common, but attractive, to illustrate God's goodness to those who seek him.

Magnificent Truths

In a few short verses, Jesus uses the simple beauty of a tiny flower to remind us of a few magnificent truths.

  • First, He points out the folly and faithlessness of our lifelong fretting over material, outward beauty.

  • Second, Jesus shows us how, with seeming effortlessness, God makes little plants more radiant than even the most opulently wealthy of human kings.

  • Last, He reminds us that by seeking God's Kingdom, we will be clothed more radiantly than the most beautiful Lily.
Clothed in White

“The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.”

Revelation 3:5

Parents and teachers of all kinds can imitate Christ's example as they craft Biblical word pictures with their families and friends.

As we've pointed out, Romans 1:18-20 tells us that God's attributes are plain to us through the study of His creation. It follows then, that Godly parents should encourage their children by teaching them about nature and the God who created it.

For starters, next time you see a Lily, why don't you remind your family of Jesus' promise that if we are seeking His Father's Kingdom, he will give us what we need!
